Now more than halfway through its ten-day NSBA futurity circuit, the A Sudden Impulse Futurity rolls on toward its conclusion on Saturday with Horsemanship, Trail, Western Riding, Western Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle classes highlighting Thursday’s schedule.
Trail Time
In the Trail pen, 23 Senior horses tested the tough Tim Kimura pattern in the $5,000 Added NSBA Senior Open Trail. Nick Mayabb and Best But Better bested the field with a 319.0 score. They earned $1,957.80 for the win.
“We call him Tad,” Nick said of the six year old gelding. “He showed in the Western Pleasure before we started doing Trail with him, and he’s been doing Trail for about two years now. He’s very honest, and he shows really well every time he shows.”
Nick commented on the challenges of the day’s Senior Trail pattern. “There was a lot of slow parts to the pattern and that can challenge a lot of horses, to slow down,” Nick said. “I had to keep telling myself and him to just go slow and not get in a hurry. I think he really did well with the walk sections and the back through in the pattern.”
Tad had a busy day. Owner Cindy Durham showed him Horsemanship in Arena 1 and had to bring him over to Nick to complete the pattern after his go. “We do Showmanship, Horsemanship and Trail,” Cindy said. “He really likes the Trail the most.”
Western Pleasure Winners
A familiar team stood at the top of the $2,000 Added $10,000 Limited Horse Open Maturity Western Pleasure. Aaron Moses has teamed up with Kent Ray Taylor on a couple of horses, and Aaron currently works with Snippity Snap for him. The trio earned $949 for the win.
“Denton DeBuhr started her and had showed her in the Congress Masters Two Year Old Western Pleasure,” Aaron said. “Kendra Weis had her last year, and they both had laid a great foundation on her. I had always wanted to work with her, and last year Kent Ray came to me and asked me if I would be interested in riding her, and of course I said yes.”
The four year old gray mare, known as Boo, is by VS Code Red and out of the decorated show mare Snap Krackle Pop. Aaron sees the family resemblance. “It’s a great cross,” he said. “I see some similarities in their personalities, and they have the same style of movement.
“She did every gait well today. I got her off the rail and she showed very well. She is just beautiful, and she has a great ring presence.”
The Non-Pros took to the Grand Arena, and couple of additional young horses by great show mares tied for top honors in the $2,000 Added Three Year Old Intermediate Non-Pro Western Pleasure. Mallory Vroegh showed Itsa Southern Belle to a tie with KM You Make It Easy and Kylee Wiseman, with Mallory earning the tiebreaker for the trophy. The two exhibitors each earned $886.79.
Itsa Southern Belle is out of Mallory’s former show mare, Krymsun Belle, and by Its a Southern Thing. Kylee’s KM You Make It Easy is by The Lopin Machine and out of the decorated KM Suddenly So Easy.
The final Western class of the day, the $2,000 Added Maturity Limited Non-Pro Western Pleasure, saw 22 exhibitors vie for the win. Katie Cochran showed Truth N Alibi to the top spot in the class, earning $718.68 for the win.
“Napoleon was bred and raised at Capital Quarter Horses,” Katie said. “He is by Lazy Loper, and was the last foal out of Alla Byes, who was by Blazing Hot. Nick Weiss and Brian Baker showed him as a two year old, and then we bought him from Tate Oakley, so he’s come full circle back to us.”
The five year old gelding has become a family horse for the Cochrans. “I show him, and my son Aden has been showing him and getting some really nice rides on him too,” Katie said. “He’s a really nice horse.”
In The Hunt
The $2,000 Added Three Year Old Limited Open Hunter Under Saddle futurity class was the only Hunter Under Saddle class to show in the Grand Arena on Thursday. Troy Lehn of Empyre Show Horses showed Hez Dressed Best for Laura Bracken, earning $1,398 for the win.
Troy proved to be a quick study of the three year old gelding. “I just started working with him two days ago,” he said. “Percy was bred, raised and trained by the Bracken family, and he’s by their stallion, Sophistication Only and out of their show mare Shez Dressed Best.
“Laura had him really locked in and ready to go, so he was ready to show today. He’s a show horse, and he goes in and does his job. It was a lot of fun to show him.”
Friday’s schedule at the A Sudden Impulse NSBA Futurity include Performance Halter, Pleasure Driving, Trail, Hunter Under Saddle and Western Pleasure.
