The 2024 Spring Breakout show, home of the Virginia Maiden, completed its second full day of competition at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Virginia, on Thursday. Four NSBA classes saw plenty of competition vie for generous payouts along with the AQHA portion of the show.
$34K Payout For Maiden Hunter Under Saddle
Southernaire, shown by Kaitlyn Hutchinson for Looney Quarter Horses earned the largest paycheck of the day, earning $10,016.48 for the win.
“We call her Madeline,” Kaitlyn said. “She’s a three year old mare by Its a Southern Thing out of a mare called Sleepy Pleasures. She’s a full sibling to Made In The South and Talk Southern To Me. We started her and have had her all the way through. We didn’t really have a set plan for her for this year, we just waited to see how she got ready. I kind of talked myself into bringing her here and getting her ready for this class.
“I thought I might as well see what I could do here. The Looneys are great customers and friends of ours, and our plan is really to keep her and breed her. Hopefully next year she will have a foal by Heres To The Blue, who I also show and won the Novice horse class with here.
“I love him, and I think he will compliment her a lot. She’s leaving here and going to the breeding shed, so I’m not sure if we’re going to get to show her later this year or not.”
When Im Good, with Tami Thurston riding for Denise Quick, took the reserve champion title and won $7,598.71. The Limited Rider bonus saw Iron Ore and Suzanne Duquette, showing for Tara Ramey, earning the $1,000 rider bonus with I Gotta Code, owned and shown by Jennifer Reams, earning the reserve rider bonus and $500.
The class had a total purse of $34,539.60, with $30,000 added and entry fees jackpotted.
Trump Wins Three Year Old & Older Limited Horse Open Western Pleasure
Americann Made, shown by Adam Mathis for Nettie Olsen, were the unanimous choice among the judges in the Three Year Old & Older Limited Horse Open Western Pleasure. The four year old gelding, whose barn name is Trump, by Machine Made and out of Lopin By Invitation (by Invitation Only) and Adam have a special bond.
“We got him last year around July,” Adam said. “I love everything about him. First of all, he’s extremely good minded, and he’s easy to get ready to show. Second, he is so rhythmic when he lopes, and sits up there when he jogs. And he just has a pleasant expression all the time.
“We’ve only shown him a few times. His first show was in Venice, Florida, and at the Premier Sires classes in Camden. We won the Limited Western Pleasure Slot class at March To The Arch. We will continue to show him in the Novice Horse Western Pleasure classes, and Nettie is showing him in Amateur Select Level 2.”
Adam praised the Spring Breakout and Virginia Maiden team. “Growing up on the East Coast, the Virginia Maiden has always been a mainstay and a show we always come to. It’s always on the calendar,” he said. “This horse show is on par with what our customers can afford, and pays out great and pays deep. It’s a great opportunity to show at a facility they’ve made some major improvements too. And you can’t beat the hospitality. Topline management, Suzanne, Meghan Tierney and Cameron Vansickle are very accommodating and make this show fun and enjoyable.”
Cinco And Matt Gouthro Win Maiden Open Western Working Rail
Matt Gouthro and Just Saay When earned the top check after winning first place and $5,457.35 in the NSBA Three Year Old & Over Maiden Western Working Rail. They showed for owner Erika Sterling. “He was really good in the class, and was right there with me all the way,” Matt said of Just Saay When, who is known as Cinco.
“He’s just three years old, and he’s by Gunner Dun It Again and out of Smartys Hot Tamale (by Smart And Chromed). We’re planning to show in all the Three Year Old events this year. Eventually he will also be Ericka’s Non-Pro horse too.”
“It was a very exciting way to start off Cinco’s show career,” added Erika. “Matt did a great job with him.”
A Non-Pro rider bonus saw Karen Johnson showing A Brown Eyed Girl, earning $1,000 and a trophy saddle. Ashley Diehl and Goodie Goodie Gone earned reserve Non-Pro rider bonus of $1,000 and the third place Non-Pro rider bonus of $500 went to Ellie Schommer showing The Ivy League.
The class saw 18 exhibitors compete for a total purse of $21,809, with entry fees jackpotted in addition to the added money.
Matt was thankful for the Maiden Open Working Western Rail class at the Spring Breakout show. “This class was something had we talked about and the show team got it put together. We had the first one here at the Spring Breakout last year,” Matt said. “I’m especially grateful to the Troutman family for sponsoring the class, and to Meghan Tierney and Cameron Vansickle for holding it.
Tops For Terlizzi In Wednesday's Three Year Old Limited Horse Hunter Under Saddle
On Wednesday, the Spring Breakout show saw its first NSBA champion crowned when Kaitlyn Hutchinson won the NSBA Three Year Old & Over Limited Open Hunter Under Saddle with Heres To The Bleu, earning $3,193.11. Owner Tali Terlizzi actually had the top two placings in the class with her horse Black N Bleu, shown by Allison McDonald, earning the reserve title and $2,535.71.
“Heres To The Blue is known as ‘Baby Stallion’ and is by Good I Will Be and out Nancy Sue Ryan’s good mare The First Ride,” Kaitlyn said. “He’s four years old. Nancy Sue raised him, and Beth Case had bought him from her before Tali got him. Beth had him as a two year old, and then he came to our house. He had gotten hurt and had to go to rehab, so our plans kind of got delayed for him, but he’s a great, great horse and I’m so thankful to get to show him.”
“It was pretty exciting to have our two horses place first and second,” noted Tali Terlizzi. “You don’t know which one to cheer for, but as it turned out we could cheer for both of them.” Tali will be showing Black N Bleu in Three Year Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle classes, while Heres To The Blue will alternate between a few of Tali’s maturity show horses.
The Spring Breakout, featuring the Virginia Maiden, continues through Saturday. On Friday, NSBA classes will include the $1,000 Added Three Year Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle, the $1,000 Added Maturity Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle, the $30,000 Added Three Year Old And Older Maiden Western Pleasure and the $1,000 Added Non-Pro Working Western Rail.
