Tuesday’s schedule at the NSBA World Championship Show and Breeders Championship Futurity saw a full slate of classes going in four arenas as the show continued. Here are a few of Tuesday’s highlights.
Im Willy Good Today saw two world titles earned in Amateur Hunter Under Saddle and the Maturity Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle with his owner, Erin Shapiro Boatwright. Erin purchased “Drake” over the winter from Sandra Morgan and the duo, along with trainer Keith Miller, have quickly become a winning combination.
“I just bought him in November,” Erin said. “I needed a horse that could do its job, with me coming back after having a Graham. I was very pregnant with him last year at this time. He lives in North Carolina with Keith and I live in California, so I try to ride as much as I can in California and I have some opportunities to ride him at shows. He went two times in the Amateur since we had two splits and a final and then again in the Non-Pro Maturity. He locked in really well. He’s such a joy to show. I can’t thank Sandra enough for letting me buy him.”
In the Breeders Championship Futurity Color Three Year Old Open Hunter Under Saddle, TWF Only The Roanly and Shannon Gillespie, showing for Susan DeMeo, earned the futurity championship. It was the very first BCF championship for Shannon.
“He’s by The Wow Factor, and we’ve had him since he was a yearling,” Shannon said.
“He won the Yearling Longe Line at the APHA World Show, and he won again as a two year old there. It’s been nice to see him come along since the beginning. He has always been very consistent and strong, and he never went through a gangly stage. He’s one of those horses you can always count on. It’s so fun to win this class – I’ve had a few reserve championships but this is our first win here.”
In Novice Amateur Hunter Under Saddle, Morgan Ramsey Miller showed Hows That For Ya to the world championship title, which was her first world title. “I’ve only owned Howdy for about nine months now,” Morgan said.
“Troy Lehn advised me to buy him, so we did. He’s just perfect. He is so much fun to show, and he wanted to be good. It feels so good to get this win!”
Laura Spell took Only On Company Time to the world championship title in the Two Year Old Limited Open Hunter Under Saddle. She showed for owner Morgan Hobson.
“This is a two year old paint gelding, and Scott Suggs had him before we got him,” Shannon said. “I got to show him at the APHA World and here. He’s a fun horse – he loves his job. He’s going to be a great horse for Morgan to show in Youth and the Non-Pro three year old classes next year"
Tali Terlizzi had a busy day on Tuesday showing her Longe Line, English and Western horses, and she added to her world titles by taking It Game On to the futurity title in the Breeders Championship Futurity Three Year Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle.
“Its Game On is by Machine Made and out of an Only In The Moonlight mare,” she said. “He did everything I asked him to do. He’s so easy for me to show.”
It’s going to be hard for Dakota Andrie to top 2021, and she added to this dream year with a world championship in the Color Breeders Championship Futurity 4-6 Year Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure with her horse, Never Have I Ever. The duo have won world championship titles at the APHA World Championship Show and the AQHYA World Championship Show before coming to the NSBA World.
“Madonna was really good,” Dakota said. “She listened and did everything I asked of her. She was soft, slow and I had to keep pushing her because she likes to stop.” After being on the road, of course a diva needs a spa day. “She gets to have salt water therapy every day, and we have added chirotherapy here at the World Show.”
The 14 year old Dakota looks forward to adding some All Around events next year under the guidance of Sara Simons, and some little divas too. “We have two babies coming by Madonna next year, and I have a two year old and a yearling too.”
Hillary Roberts had a busy afternoon. She showed Johnnie On The Spot to win the Color Amateur Western Pleasure world championship title by a unanimous decision, then returned to show Start Ur Engines to win the futurity title in the Breeders Championship Futurity Three Year Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure.
“It’s really gratifying to be able to raise them and get to show them successfully,” Hillary said. “I showed his mother, Momma Knows Best, and he resembles her, and seeing that next generation do well is pretty fulfilling.”
In the Breeders Championship Futurity 4-6 Year Old Open Western Pleasure, Nothin But Nett, shown by Rusty Green for Susie Johns, went straight from the Trail pen to the Western Pleasure arena where he scored 235 ten minutes before, to become the futurity champions.
“He’s now four years old, by Machine Made and out of an RL Best Of Sudden mare, and we call him Brett,” Rusty said. “He won the AQHA Three Year Old Versatility class last year, and we took him home from the World Show to work together on him. He’s just a great Western Pleasure based All Around stallion and we love him.”
In a tough Green Western Pleasure class that took two splits and a final to determine the champion, Madefourit and Katy Jo Zuidema added to the stallion’s accolades by being named the world champions. Katy Jo shows the stallion for Keith Oyer and Stephanie Armellini.
“He shows so great,” Katy Jo said. “He’s really figured out showing over the past couple of months, and he really lets me show him. He was a rock star today.”
In the Breeders Championship Futurity Intermediate Non-Pro Three Year Old Western Pleasure, Courtney Moses showed Best To Be Loping to the futurity champion title. “Carla was in the barn, and we got her right before the Tom Powers,” Courtney said. “She’s by The Loping Machine. She’s really a fun challenge for me. She’s a beautiful mover and has such a pretty eye. We had a really good ride.
"I have to thank my husband Aaron for always pushing me to be better, and our assistant Jess Duffy rode her quite a bit too. Both Jess and Cody (Conover) have done a great job.”
A number of other Western Pleasure Riders were named world champions on Tuesday. Made Sleepy and Becky Galyean were named the world champions in the Three Year Old Limited Open Western Pleasure, and Chad Piper and No Doubting Me picked up their second NSBA world title in the Breeders Championship Futurity 4-6 Year Old Intermediate Open Western Pleasure, showing for owner Cynthia Kaufman. JR Cook’s gelding Line Up Behind picked up another world title in Amateur Western Pleasure. Mark Zeitler also showed Swagger Machine to win the Two Year Old Intermediate Open Western Pleasure.
Two graduates of the NSBA Markel Insurance Breeders Championship Futurity Yearling Sale placed in the top ten in their designated classes and will earn their share of the sale graduate purse. Diva No Doubt, shown by Becky Galyean for Gil and Becky Galyean, placed tenth in the BCF Three Year Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure, while Mallory Vroegh showed Itsa Southern Belle to fifth place in the BECF Intermediate Non-Pro Three Year Old Western Pleasure.
