Katy Jo Zuidema once again hit it out of the park on both her Western Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle horses, and Kelby Hutchinson was also a double champion at the 2019 Madness AQHA and NSBA circuit on Friday.
Knockin It Out Notches Another Win
With wins on three judge’s cards, Katy Jo Zuidema won the Equine Chronicle Novice Horse Western Pleasure with Knockin It Out, earning the $15,000 first place pay check for owner Kathryn Frederick. In addition to the first place check, Katy Jo also earned a $2,000 bonus for showing in a Harris Leatherworks saddle.
The duo had unanimously won the Three Year Old Open Western Pleasure on Thursday. Taking reserve honors in the Open division of the Novice Horse Western Pleasure were Snap It Send It and Aaron Moses, showing for Kent Ray Taylor.
“I had no complaints,” Katy Jo said. “Pipa gave me a really good ride.”
The series of Novice Horse Western Pleasure classes, such as the one at the Madness have proven popular with trainers and horse owners. “We specifically kept this horse back for this class,” Katy Jo said.
“I think it is a great thing to be able to bring these horses along at their own pace, and really it’s becoming the trend in our training philosophy. Being able to have these classes to show in makes it worth it, and we have better horses for it.”

Dont Know Dont Care Earns Intermediate and Limited Novice Horse Wins
Kelby Hutchinson showed Dont Know Dont Care to win the Limited and Intermediate divisions of the class, earning $1,000 for each division win for Capall Creek Farm LLC.
“This is a four year old mare that we call Twiggy,” Kelby said. “She’s by No Doubt Im Lazy and out of a Radical Rodder mare.”
Kelby has a history with the mare. “I started her as a two year old when I was working with Jay and Kristy Starnes, and Abbey Rawlings owned her. We bought her in January when I went to work for Capall Creek, for Amy Smith.”
Like Katy Jo, Kelby is pleased to have the Novice Horse classes as an option for his show horses. “This horse is sort of fine boned, and we definitely waiting on her for these classes,” he said. “Having these Novice and Maiden classes definitely give us more options for a horse’s career. It’s a great thing.”
Both the Open and Intermediate and Limited division champions in the class were by the stallion No Doubt Im Lazy. “The ones that I have rode personally have all trained up great and become great show horses,” he said.
“This mare is still really green and we have a few things to work on. She is a little quirky, with a lot of personality, but she’s so pretty and shows with a lot of expression. This is just my third time to show her, but she was really good.”
Taking reserve honors and a $500 prize in the Intermediate division was Metamorphic, shown by Brian Cox for Tammy Conroy. In the Limited division, Christina Brantner showed PSU Certain Hope to the reserve title for Penny Osburn, also earning $500.

7th (tie) – Shootin The Breeze, Tim Zuidema for Kathryn Frederick, $1,750
7th (tie) – Metamorphic, Brian Cox for Tammy Conroy, $1,750
Night Shades and The Classic Asset Tie to Win $1,000 Added NSBA Green Hunter Under Saddle
It came down to the tiebreaker judge to determine who walked home with the trophy, but Night Shades, with Katy Jo Zuidema in the irons, and The Classic Asset, with Julian Harris aboard, each earned a check for $580 for their tie in the Madness $1,000 Added NSBA Green Hunter Under Saddle. The tiebreaker system awarded the trophy to Katy Jo.
“Katy Jo bred and raised him and we bought him from her,” noted Jamie Anderson, whose daughter owns the gelding known as ‘Slate.’ “My daughter Natalie showed him for the very first time at the Congress and was part of a three-way tie for first. We love his temperament – he has such a wonderful disposition, and he’s a beautiful mover. Katy Jo and Stephanie are having a great year with him. They've won just about everywhere thay've shown him.”
The four year old gelding is by Too Sleepy To Zip and out of Katy Jo’s Good Certifiable mare. “Stephanie (Armellini) and I have been switching off showing him, and it’s just sort of worked out that Stephanie shows him in the AQHA and I’ve mostly shown him in the NSBA classes,” Katy Jo noted. “He was really good. He's a great loper and trotter, and he’s very kind.”
Julian Harris was also proud of his gelding, The Classic Asset, and his performance. “We call him Cooper, and he’s a three year old,” Julian said.
“I just love his personality. He’s by Allocate Your Assets, and his owner, Karen Ripper, bred and raised him, so he’s pretty special. It’s very cool to be part of his career. He gets better every time we go out.”
